Taiwan Photo Diary: Part 1

Monday, January 11, 2016

There are two reviews of Taiwan I heard on repeat before visiting. 1) There is nothing to do, 2) The food is out of this world. After three days of exploring Taipei I can tell you the latter is absolutely true, and for me, endless dining means there is plenty to do.

As I mentioned in my previous post, I have embarked on a month-long travel adventure before joining the corporate world in March. My roommates and I began this journey in Taipei, the peaceful metropolitan capital of Taiwan inhabited by some of the kindest people I've ever met. My favorite moments of the trip so far have been the gondola ride to the hills of Maokong (below) and the energetic night markets lined with stalls of local food.

Maokong:
A scenic gondola ride to a village known for locally-grown tea.
Oolong tea ice cream. Can we get this to America please?

Chiang-Kai Shek Memorial Hall

Afternoon Tea
The Taiwanese are professionals in making desserts that are not too sweet, but perfectly satisfying. My first meal in the city was afternoon tea at the National History Museum.

Yongkang Street
Known for some of the best food in town.
Taiwan's famous beef noodle soup, a few dim sum dishes, and the softest tofu from Kao Chi.

It's official. Taiwan has the best mangoes on Earth. This shaved ice from Smoothie House is incomparable.

The best part of Yongkang Street that day? The random (but absolutely adorable) dog celebration that took over its entire park.

Stay tuned for more from our Taiwan trip and where we are headed next!

  6. These photos are fantastic! I'm slowly checking off my travel list and Taiwan is on there for 2017. I've checked off, Spain, Italy, France, Iceland, Japan & Hong Kong. 2016 is Sweden & Norway. You've got me excited for Taiwan which is a little early I'd say. I can't wait to see Part II of your trip. Thanks for sharing, this is great.

    1. I would say you do need to know some Mandarin, but in the tourist areas you can get by with English. If you visit, learn some basic/survival words!
