One Day Itinerary: Bath, England

Tuesday, March 1, 2016

Set in the countryside of southwest England is Bath, a city so uniquely beautiful that it has been named a UNESCO World Heritage site. Those who know of the area typically associate it with the historical Roman Baths and natural hot springs. Those who don't chuckle at the name.

After just one day in Bath, I can say that this is now one of my favorite cities in England. What it lacks in size it makes up for in stunning architecture and surroundings. You can easily spend all day admiring the Georgian infrastructure as you roam the quiet streets. Today I'm sharing our itinerary for one day in Bath, in hopes of convincing you to venture to the small English city one day as well.

Brunch at Sally Lunn's

Whether you dine in or take out from Sally Lunn's, tasting their famous bun is a must. The restaurant is set in the oldest house in Bath, so I recommend eating in just to admire the interior's history. The Sally Lunn bun is a delicacy of Bath, though it is really just a very light bread. We ordered buns topped with smoked salmon and spiced beef. The meal won't leave you stuffed, but surely satisfied.

The Roman Baths

This is Bath's main attraction and rightfully so. Just by looking at photos you cannot imagine the complexity of this historical site. We ended up spending about two hours with our audio guides exploring the baths, as it is extremely well-preserved. This is a site you must see at least once in your life.

The Pulteney Bridge

Built in the late 1700s, the Pulteney Bridge is a stunning work of historical architecture and just one of four bridges lined with shops in the world. It is just a short walking distance from The Roman Baths and sits next to the lovely Parade Gardens if you need a little rest.

An Afternoon Stroll

The best thing about a quaint city like Bath is getting lost in the streets. Every corner has character, and the city is so quiet that you can easily enjoy a slow stroll. These shots were taken on our way to The Circus, which you will see below.

The Circus

The Circus is a beautiful example of eighteenth-century Georgian architecture in Bath and is currently home to townhouses arranged into a massive circular shape. Not one picture can capture the effect of this stunning ring of homes.

The Royal Crescent

Just a block away from The Circus is The Royal Crescent, one of the most iconic sites in Bath. Today it also serves as residences, which elegantly overlook Royal Victoria Park. Like The Circus, these townhouses are also arranged into a stunning crescent that will leave you awestruck.

Dinner at The Scallop Shell

Unlike New York, Bath is a city that sleeps. Before retiring early to our hotel, we came across an adorable seafood restaurant on the back streets on Bath. If you ever visit the city, you must make a stop at The Scallop Shell. This quickly became our favorite fish and chips meal of the entire trip. Everything was fried to perfection, and the portions are so large that you may just have a midnight snack to take back as well.
